If you are looking for a genuine original Candlestick Telephone, fully restored and in good working order, look no further.
This is a beautiful example of a GENUINE 1926 Candlestick Telephone, all original, complete with its Bell Set in the condition it would have been found when in use.
The telephone is now fully operational and ready to simply ‘plug in and go’ on BT and cable networks.
This item has been carefully restored with special attention given to detail.
It has an early No 1 mouthpiece with its original detachable ebonite cone.
The original black No 10 dial with enamel number plate is in excellent condition ensuring many more years of trouble free service.
The main pedestal has been professionally restored and re-coated to its proper stoved black finish. The perch, hook and transmitter head are blue/black oxidised brass.
The No 1 bell set ensures correct operation. The beautifully made oak cabinet has been carefully restored then french polished to a beautiful finish. The twin bells ring loud and clear with that nostalgic sound of times long past.
The new line connector cord has a special brown cloth covering in keeping with the period. This allows the bell set to be mounted up to 10 feet away from the wall socket. The twin receiver cord is the original and the 4 foot plaited cloth cord between the pedestal and bellset is a new high quality replacement in Egyption cotton.
All parts are in excellent condition with no signs of damage. There has been no "rubbing down" of the brass work. None of these telephones had exposed brass when in use. The bell receiver is complete with its original ebonite coating which shows minimal signs of wear.
Transmitter: W - 26 / 4001 No 1 (Western Electric (1926)
Perch: 4029, two other markings crossed
Bellset: GPO TE 31/235 No 1(Telephone Manufacturing Co(TMC 1931)
In order to improve on the original performance and to comply with modern standards, the following modifications have been carried out:
1. Improvement to outgoing speech: the original carbon granule transmitter has been replaced with an electronic type providing excellent quality speech.
No more hiss and crackle! The original carbon transmitter can be packed with the telephone if requested.
2. A rectifier element had been added to the receiver in order to prevent the loud acoustic "pops" which plagued these early telephones.
3. A resistor has been added to the ringing circuit so that the telephone has a value of REN 1
The telephone has been thoroughly tested with up to date calibrated test equipment. This ensures that the dial speed and timing are set correctly and the instrument complies with current BT and Cable Network requirements.
Please check that your telephone line will accept pulse dialling before purchase (the majority still accept both pulse and tone).
Installation of the Telephone
The telephone and bell (REN 1) simply plugs into your 'phone socket. No extra wiring is required.
The plaited cord connects the pedestal to the bell set allowing up to 1.5 meters of separation. A modern PSTN line cord (approx 2.5 metres, cloth covered) is taken from the bell set to the wall socket. Various combinations are possible therefore the purchaser may request another arrangement tailored to suit their location. In most cases this carries no extra charge. Accompanying the telephone will be information on how to look after and get the most from it.
The pedestal model together with the 121 wall mounted model introduced in the early 1900’s were the first standard British Post Office telephones. As most people were then on manual exchanges, the dial was omitted or a blank number plate would be fitted instead. This model is the earlier version introduced from America having a detachable "daffodil" trumpet shaped mouthpiece. The dial would have been retro fitted at a later date when automatic telephony was available. If you would like more information please ask.
The telephone and bell set are guaranteed in normal use for 2 years from purchase. In the unlikely event of failure, the telephone would be returned for repair. The return postage will be paid. Due to the "built to last forever" philosophy which prevailed during the early 1900's, it's highly unlikely that anything would fail if proper care is taken.
